Asbab al-Nuzul lil Wahidi
Imam ‘Alī ibn Ahmad al-Wāhidī (d. 468/1075) is one of the earliest scholars of the branch of the Qur’anic sciences known as Asbāb al-Nuzūl (i.e. the contexts and occasions of the Revelation of the Qur’an). Imam Al-Wāhidī and subsequent scholars aimed to collect and systemize information concerning all the known reasons and contexts for the Revelation of particular Qur’anic verses. Hereunder is a translation of this work by Mokrane Guezzou. This translaion represents the first accurate and reliable English translation of this seminal work.

Tafsir al Jalaalain
Tafsir al-Jalalayn is one of the most significant tafsirs for the study of the Qur’an. Composed by the two “Jalals” – Imam Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 ah / 1459 ce) and his pupil Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 ah / 1505 ce), Tafsir al-Jalalayn is generally regarded as one of the most easily accessible works of Qur’anic exegesis because of its simple style and one volume length. For the first time ever Tafsir al-Jalalayn is competently translated into an unabridged highly accurate and readable annotated English translation by Doctor. Feras Hamza.

Hanafi books for download
Ahkaam al Quraan of Imam Tahawi
One of the first books on Ahkaam al Quraan. This priceless book can be downloaded on the following link:
Mukhtasar at-Tahawi
Amongst the earliest legal texts of the Hanafi madhhab is the Mukhtasar of the Hadith and Fiqh master, Imam Abu Ja’far al-Tahawi. The text, amongst the famous mutun (legal texts) of the school, despite its importance to the madhhab and the lofty status of its author, is not readily available or even studied.
After the famous Jami’ al-Saghir and other short texts of Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani, the Mukhtasar of Imam Tahawi is considered the first mukhtasar (condensed collection of legal rulings) in the Hanafi school. This text was followed by the more recognized early legal texts such as the Mukhtasar of Imam Abu ‘l-Hasan al-Karkhi al-Baghdadi (died 340 a.h.), the Mukhtasar of Imam Abu Bakr al-Jassas al-Razi (died 370 a.h.), and the Mukhtasar of Imam Abu ‘l-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Quduri (died 428 a.h.).
Texts such as Tuhfat al-Fuqaha’, Bidayat al-Mubtadi, al-Hawi, al-Fiqh al-Nafi’, etc… were all authored much later in the sixth and seventh centuries.
The special attribute of the Mukhtasar of Imam Tahawi is that it is authored by an early master of the school, an imam who gained tremendous repute not only as a jurist (faqih) but also as a traditionist (muhaddith). The book is organized similar to the Mukhtasar of Imam Muzani, Imam Tahawi’s uncle who was the acknowledged successor of Imam Shafi’i and arguably his most capable student.
Like Imam Tahawi’s other books, in particular his Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar and Sharh Mushkil al-Athar, Mukhtasar al-Tahawi has escaped the interest of many a modern student of Hanafi fiqh and therefore deserves their special attention. As these early texts of the madhhab become more and more readily available through both print and electronic media, it is only fair now that students accord them the attention that they deserve.
Lastly, we owe special thanks to the honorable Mufti Husain Kadodia (may Allah preserve him) for providing us the link to this invaluable work. The book can be downloaded on the following link:
(Moulana Bilal Ali Ansari, a student of Hadhrat Mufti Taqi Uthmani and Moulana Tariq Jameel Saheb)
Mukhtasar al-Quduri
Perhaps al-Quduri’s most famous work, Al-Mukhtasar is also known as al-Kitab. The number of issues it addresses is 12,500, spanning the entire spectrum of fiqh, for the book covers
not only matters of worship, but also business transactions, personal relations and penal and judicial matters. Abu `Ali al-Shashi said about the book, “Whoever memorizes this book is the best accomplished of our associates in memorization, and whoever understands it is the best accomplished of our associates in understanding.”

Minhat al-Suluk fi Sharh Tuhfat al-Muluk w/ Marginal Notes by the Imam of Masjid Nabawiyy

Moulana Bilal Ali Ansari writes, “Ever since I laid my hands upon the famous short Hanafi fiqh text al-Hadiyyah al-’Ala’iyyah in 2005, I had been longing to find a similar beginner’s book on Hanafi fiqh that was worthy of translation into English and that shared al-Hadiyyah’s conciseness, flow, and choice of content. The special characteristic of al-Hadiyyah that I sought so intently for an English fiqh primer was its inclusion of chapters on etiquette in addition to the normal chapters on the acts of worship. This I believed, and still believe, is absolutely important for an introductory fiqh text.”
“Therefore, back in 2006 whilst studying hadith sciences under the great research scholar, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Halim Nu’mani, when I chanced upon a short fiqh text that fit such a description even better than al-Hadiyyah in the Jami’ah’s library, I was nothing short of elated.”
“The book, neatly bound and beautifully composed, claimed in the publisher’s introduction to be one of the mutun mu’tabirah in the Hanafi madhhab. Interestingly enough, I had never come across this matn before and was not aware of its inclusion by scholars amongst the core Hanafi fiqh texts. Entitled Tuhfat al-Muluk fi Fiqhi Madhhab al-Imam Abi Hanifah al-Nu’man, the text was authored by none other than Imam Zayn al-Din Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Razi (died 666 a.h.), the famous author of the renowned dictionary, Mukhtar al-Sihah.”
“What was so special about the book was that despite its brevity and exclusion of the main chapters on mu’amalat, the book had added the following important chapters to the normal list of ‘ibadat, some chapters which, in my humble opinion, no beginning fiqh text should be without:
- Jihad
- Sayd wa ‘l-Dhaba’ih
- Karahah
- Fara’id
- Kasb wa ‘l-Adab
Fortunately, I was able to purchase the Tuhfah from Mufti Husain Kadodia last year and while reading through the introduction more thoroughly, I noticed that the book had a commentary that had been written by the famed scholar, Imam Badr al-Din al-’Ayni (may Allah have mercy on him). The title of the commentary was Minhat al-Suluk and because of the prestigious rank of Imam ‘Ayni, I was, of course, keen on finding out more about its availability.”
“Knowing that most such small commentaries on Hanafi texts remain yet unpublished, I didn’t keep much hope in finding the text in published form. At the same time, I was hopeful in being able to find at least a manuscript of the text from libraries in Egypt.”
“You can imagine my joy then, when during my Hajj trip this year, I stumbled upon a published version of Imam ‘Ayni’s commentary in the library of Masjid Nabawiyy. Beautifully printed in four volumes, the commentary included marginal notes by, surprisingly enough, the Hanbali Khatib and Imam of the Masjid Nabawiyy, Shaykh Abdul Muhsin al-Qasim. The marginal notes were entitled al-Masbuk and despite being simply tahqiq, ta’liq, and takhrij work, its title donned the cover of the four-volume set. While searching for the Minhat al-Suluk online, I was able to find a downloadable copy of the commentary with its marginal notes.”
“I highly recommend that readers take out the time to read through at least portions of the book and benefit from its style and content. It would be also extremely beneficial if the book be translated into English and included in the course material of introductory fiqh classes at weekend Islamic schools or maktabs.”

Jami’ ash Shurooh wal Hawaashi
An outstanding contemporary work is the 3 volume book “Jami ash-Shuruh wa al-Hawashi”, which is similar to books like Kashf ad-Dhunun, but much more detailed.
It mentions books in alphabetical order, then all the works on each, with their publication info.
So if one is looking for the different works on “Manar” for example, find “Manar” alphabetically, under which all the relevant info would be mentioned.
It can be downloaded from the following direct links:

Hereunder is Mufti Ibrahim Sadiqabadi saheb’s (Pakistan) conclusive and comprehensive book on the oft-debated issue of the prevalent collective du’a after fardh prayers and a similar book by Mawlana Mufti Yusuf sahib of Chittagong (Bangladesh) – rahimahullah. The following link will allow you to download the entire It’haf al-Sadat al-Muttaqin bi Sharh Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din in scanned PDF format. This is the best ever edition of this magnificent book (thus confirmed by Mawlana Husain Kadodia sahib). As it is a late 1800s print, you may initially have difficulty in reading the text, but you should soon get used to it. Please download all ten volumes and save them in a single folder without renaming them. Insha Allah, all the volumes should be interlinked (i.e. you should be able to use the PDF contents on the left side of your screen).

Mawqif A’immat al-Harakat al-Salafiyyah min al-Tasawwuf wa ‘l-Sufiyyah by Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafiz al-Makki: Book Review
Introduction by Moulana Bilal Ali Ansari.
The great Imam Nu’man ibn Thabit Abu Hanifah, or al-Imam al-A’zam (or the Grand Imam), divided fiqh into three categories. According to his definition of fiqh, which meant simply “understanding one’s rights and responsibilities”, the highest level of fiqh consisted of a sound comprehension of authentic creed. This level of fiqh he termed al-Fiqh al-Akbar, or Major Fiqh.
According to the Imam, the lowest level of these three categories, al-Fiqh al-Asghar (Minor Fiqh), covered legal rulings, or ahkam. In other words, in relation to rank of importance, creed held the first position while legal rulings, or what we call fiqh today, held the last.
Above this last category of fiqh, Imam Abu Hanifah positioned al-Fiqh al-Awsat. This medium level of fiqh was defined by the science of perfecting one’s character and esoteric attributes, in other words: purification of the soul.
This level of fiqh, preceded only by the science of ‘aqidah (creed) in importance, has enjoyed many labels over the centuries. Some people called this Middle Fiqh tazkiyah or taziyat al-nafs. Others called it fiqh al-batin. Still others called it tasawwuf. Whatever the label happened to be, however, the goal and purpose remained the same.
Unfortunately, however, as certain labels began to share association with the troubling actions of some who claimed adherence to them, the word tasawwuf began to suffer the same collective guilt syndrome that Islam is now afflicted with today.
It is due to this unfortunate association that today tasawwuf and sufis have a bad name. In particular, many Muslims who attribute their creed and fiqh to the pious Salaf – and then label themselves therefore “Salafi” – have an allergy, as one of my teachers would call it, for tasawwuf.
This book tackles the issue of tasawwuf from the angle of those who are considered the “Imams of the Salafi movement”. The author, a respected student and deputy of the great hadith master, Shaykh al-Hadith Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandhalawi (may Allah have mercy on him), has collected a large number of quotations from the books of Imams Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, Dhahabi, Ibn Kathir, Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, and Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab (may Allah have mercy on them) and proved through their own sayings that they supported tasawwuf and sufis, if even only in concept.
Over three hundred pages, the book is a must for every student of the science of tasawwuf, especially for those seekers who are faced daily with a barrage of objections from shallow-minded literalists who attribute themselves to the Salaf.

Izhar al-Haq (Izharul Haq) of Shaykh Rahmatullah Kayranwi: Available Online
Izharul Haq – Online PDF version
This book, internationally recognized as one of the most authoritative and objective studies of the Bible, was originally written in Arabic under the title Izharul-Haq (Truth Revealed) by the distinguished 19th century Indian scholar, Rahmatullah Kairanvi, and appeared in 1864. The book was subsequently translated into Urdu, and then from Urdu into English by Mohammad Wali Raazi.
Allamah Rahmatullah Kairanvi wrote the book in response to the Christian offensive against Islam during the British rule in India, and specifically to counter the subversive attack made by the Rev. C. C. P. Fonder. Rev. Fonder had written a
book in Urdu entitled Meezanul Haq, the open intention of which was to create doubts into the minds of the Muslims about the authenticity of the Qur’an and Islam.
Allamah Kairanwi’s intention in his book was first of all to show that the Bible cannot in any way be considered as a directly revealed book. He does this very effectively by means of his voluminous and authoritative knowledge of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. He demonstrates beyond doubt that the Books of the Old and New Testaments have been altered, almost beyond recognition, from their original forms. The work is even more notable in the light of subsequent Jewish and Christian scholarship and the various discoveries that have since been made in this field which all bear out the truth of Kairanvi’s thesis.

Rare Manuscripts
Many makhtoots (manuscripts) can be downloaded from the following link:
Princeton University Officially Unveils its Digital Library of 200 Islamic Manuscripts
Princeton University has placed a new digital library of 200 Islamic manuscripts online for scholars to consult and study.
These manuscripts were selected from some 9,500 volumes of Islamic manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish and other languages of the Muslim world in the University Library’s Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. Princeton’s extraordinary holdings constitute the premier collection in the Western Hemisphere and among the finest in the world, according to Don Skemer, curator of manuscripts.
The digital library is a major component of the Islamic Manuscripts Cataloging and Digitization Project, begun in 2005 with the generous support of the David A. Gardner ‘69 Magic Project. Eventually, all of the manuscripts will be cataloged online, which involves creating bibliographic records containing basic descriptive information that helps researchers decide whether to order microform copies or to visit the library in person.
“The Islamic Manuscripts Cataloging and Digitization Project was conceived specifically as a way for the library to improve access to these rich collections and share them worldwide through digital technology,” Skemer said. “It is hoped that the project will make a contribution to international understanding and serve as a gesture of good will to a critical part of the world.”
Michael Cook, the Class of 1943 University Professor of Near Eastern Studies and one of the leading Islamicists in America, said, “Princeton has 9,500 Islamic manuscripts in Arabic and other languages in a location that is very convenient for scholars based in North America, but far less so for those based in the Islamic world or Europe. Most of the collection is described in printed catalogs, and scholars can always obtain microfilms of the manuscripts. But the printed catalogs are old and not available everywhere, while microfilms often provide images of poor quality. The online digital library thus marks a major advance in providing up-to-date descriptions of the manuscripts to anyone who can log onto the Web, and in making at least some of the manuscripts available online in fine-quality digital images.”
The digital library includes this Arabic botanical manuscript from the 15th century that is from the Robert Garrett Collection donated to the University in 1942.
Approximately two-thirds of the manuscripts were donated to the University in 1942 by Robert Garrett, a member of Princeton’s class of 1897. But the library has continued to build this collection since then.
The digitized manuscripts date from the early centuries of Islam until the fall of the Ottoman Empire. They originated in all parts of the Islamic world, from Moorish Spain and northern Africa in the West, through the Middle East, and to India and Indonesia in the East. Subject coverage is fairly encyclopedic, including history, biography, philosophy and logic, theology (based both on the Quran and tradition), law and jurisprudence, language, literature, book arts and illustration, magic and occult sciences, astrology, astronomy, mathematics, medicine, and other aspects of the spiritual and intellectual life of the Islamic world.
While the digital library emphasizes rare or unique texts of academic research interest, it also includes a selection of Persian illuminated manuscripts and Mughal miniatures, such as a magnificent 18th-century Indian album of miniatures and calligraphy.
Princeton expects to add more manuscripts to the digital library in the future, besides producing the online bibliographic descriptions.
Click here for access to the digitized manuscripts. From this webpage, click on “View the Digital Library” and select any of the 200 manuscripts, which are listed both alphabetically and by subject and genre.

English ‘Aqidah Tahawiyyah Translations and Commentaries
Moulana Bilal Ali Ansari mentions.
“For a while now, I have been collecting a number of translations of the famous al-’Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah for the purpose of rendering a new and more accessible translation for some of my students. Given the verbiage of some translations and the inaccuracy of others, it was important to look through all the other existing works before embarking on a new one.
After looking through all the translations, it seemed that Shaykh Hamza Yusuf’s was, for the most part, the most true to the Arabic and precise in the English. Although I have differed from his translation in a number of places, I found that his use of terms and style best reflected the original Arabic text.
Although I have not yet finalized my modified version of Shaykh Hamza’s translation, I wished to provide a list of existing translations and commentaries in English for the readers of the blog, most of which I came across during the editing process.”
Translations:
Shaykh Abu Adam Naruji’s translation with short commentary
Shaykh Iqbal Ahmad Azami’s translation

Khatm-e-Bukhari Sharif in Jami’ah Dar al-‘Ulum Karachi, 1424 AH (2003 CE)
Hereunder are two very valuable recordings that have recently been digitised from audio tapes. The first is an extremely rare radio interview of Imam ‘Allamah Mufti Muhammad Shafi’ sahib (one of the most eminent khulafa of Hakim al-Ummah Imam Mawlana Ashraf ‘Ali Thanwi, Grand Mufti of the Dar al-‘Ulum in Deoband, Grand Mufti of Pakistan and, of course, the illustrious father of Shaykhuna Mawlana Mufti Muhammad Rafi’ Usmani and ‘Allamah Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani – d. 1396 AH / 1976 CE).
The second recording is that of the khatm-e-Bukhari Sharif in Jami’ah Dar al-‘Ulum Karachi that took place during 1424 AH (2003 CE), the year I was blessed to be one of approximately 300 students graduating from formal Dars-e-Nizami studies in the exemplary institution. This jalsa of khatm-e-Bukhari was attended by approximately 15,000 – 20,000 people (although other people have given even higher estimates of the number of attendees) and perhaps this is how it normally is in Dar al-‘Ulum Karachi. The final dars of Sahih al-Bukhari was delivered by the Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Taqi Usmani (hafizahullah) who taught the entire book (both parts) alone. Insha Allah, there is a lot to be gained from this recording of the dars for ‘ulama and laypersons alike. The recording is 1hr 47mins long. Please feel free to pass on to others.

Below are the links to 2 more recent recordings of ‘Allamah Shaykh Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani (hafizahullah) saheb’s speeches. The first is the recent Khatm-e-Bukhari Sharif dars in Walsall, England, UK. The second is a talk delivered in Masjid-e-Hamza, Birmingham, England, UK. Both recordings are taken from a mobile phone, therefore, not of an excellent quality. The former is better than the latter. Presented courtesy of Mawlana Fakhruddeen sahib of B’ham.
An Arabic translation of Hadhrat Mufti ‘Abd al-Rahim Lajpuri’s (rahimahullah) risalah on Taqlid with a muqaddamah by Hadhrat Mawlana ‘Abd al-Hafiz Makki (hafizahullah) and Mawlana Abu ‘l-Hasan ‘Ali Nadwi (rahimahullah).
